You climb above 3000 m altitude, so there will be various obstacles in this trail but not too risky.

The trails pass through several rugged and steep sections with stone stairs at some point. Likewise, you trek along rocky ridges, river gorges, pasturelands, and forested areas, which can be exhausting for some voyagers.

However, this trial has no technical sections, so completing it won’t be much hassle. But the challenging geography makes the journey quite a challenge.

Trek Distance and Duration

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek covers a total distance of 115 km in this journey, and you walk around 15 km per day for 5 to 6 hours. Usually, people can travel at a speed of 3 to 5 km per hour, but covering long distances in limited hours will be challenging for many.

Plus, many trekkers shorten their itinerary, which is a mistake as it increases the walking duration and distance. Walking longer distances and time is a disadvantage in the Himalayas as it increases the chances of altitude sickness and other health-related problems.

Lack of physical fitness

A high-elevated journey comes with its own challenges and difficulties, so lack of physical fitness can ruin the trip. You can quickly get tired and lose breath if you are not healthy to walk in these steep and rugged terrains.

The journey gets more challenging and harsh as you reach higher in the routes. The walks get steeper and have several ups and downs, which feels uneasy with preparation.

Budget Management

Every trekking destination has different prices depending on its route. Similarly, Annapurna Base Camp Trek varies depending on the trail you take, type of accommodation, and more.

Compared to other trekking routes, the budget is slightly high, even during the off-season. The price of goods and services is regular in the lower region, but the cost increases and gets expensive as you climb higher.

The accommodation, water, and food costs are double, even triple than the normal range. There are various offers, discounts, and bargains in February, but still, the charge is high in the routes.

So, it can be a little tough for budget travelers, but the views and hospitality are worth all the cost.

Accommodation and Food in Annapurna Base Camp Trek in February

Annapurna Base Camp Trek in February is mostly tea house trips with standard to basic accommodation. The rooms are twin-sharing for most of the journey. You will find luxurious rooms in the lower areas, but it gets simpler with the rise in altitude.

Each room comes with beds, pillows, and blankets in higher places. There are no attached toilets, only common ones which are also outside the hotels. The toilets are Asian-style squat ones, and you will rarely find western bathrooms.

However, the best thing about Annapurna Base Camp Trek in February is the empty tea houses offering maximum facilities at a specific discount. You do not need to book early or pay in advance.

Moreover, you get to taste the staple food of Nepalese people, dal-bhat, throughout the trek. The item includes rice, pulses, lentils, curry, spinach, pickles, and more.

You also eat various tasty foods for lunch and breakfast like toast, jam, Tibetan bread, soup, spaghetti, noodles, and many more.

Tips to overcome difficulties of Annapurna Base Camp Trek in February

Pack right clothes and gear

Traveling during winter requires packing the right gear and clothes that protect you from the cold. Insufficient and inappropriate packing can ruin the entire tour. Annapurna Base Camp in February requires you to dress in layers, so bring a down jacket and sleeping bag.

Winter clothes already make your baggage heavy, so you need to avoid bringing any unnecessary items for the trek.

Longer Itinerary

The itinerary plays a significant role in deciding how your trek will turn out to be. A short itinerary has a more extended destination to cover during a hike and vice versa. You should know that walking more than 6 to 7 hours a day can affect your health in various ways.

So, always choose a longer itinerary that has short trekking hours. Moreover, if you are a new trekker, select an itinerary with one or two acclimatization days.

Acclimatize and hydrate yourself regularly

Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a high elevation trek, so you need to acclimate appropriately and keep drinking water to keep yourself hydrated. You can find lodges, guesthouses, and hotels on your way, which are pretty convenient and cheap. They are many best places to stay on the trail, but they vary in cost and amenities.

The prices to book a room is quite reasonable in the lower elevation. But, as you go higher, it costs a fortune to reserve one partly because of the remoteness and lack of full accessibility. Limited options and availability of accommodation cause a dramatic increase in the rise of accommodation in Kanchenjunga.

In this case, you’ll find teahouses to be the best alternative as it’s budget-friendly and suitable for backpackers. They have better access, and the facilities are up to standard. You can lease a single or shared room with an en-suite, which costs about US$6 to US$8 per night. You can also find yourself many well-facilitated hotels and guesthouses on the trek, but they will be slightly expensive.

Guides & Porters

It’s common for trekkers to hire a guide and porter in Kanchenjunga as the trails are not so easy to navigate. They are mainly rugged with many twists and turns, making it hard to crack down without proper knowledge or guidance for the routes.

It’s nice to have a local tour guide or a professional who can navigate the way while introducing you to the native people and their culture. They can provide you with information on the major landmarks and take you to the best spot for spectacular views.

Having a porter alongside all is always a perk when trekking Kanchenjunga. They’ll presumably ease your journey by helping you with the backpack. The porter will carry your luggage and other stuff so that you can beat the grueling trail and safely make it to the intended site.

It can cost you anywhere from US$25 to US$30 to hire a porter in Kanchenjunga, whereas the price for leasing a guide can go up to US$35 per day. It covers the cost of their food, accommodation, and travel insurance.

Food & Drinks

Food & Drinks in Kanchenjunga are not cheap, especially when compared to big cities like Kathmandu. They have limited stocks and supply of goods with massive travel fares, which sees an increase in price.

Locals running lodges and guesthouses rely predominantly on the agricultural products on the farm. They have to transport most of the ingredients from nearby cities and towns, which costs a lot.

The typical Nepali dish served to the guest can cost US$6 to US$9, depending on where you’re. They are generally more expensive at higher altitudes as only a few settlements exist. Breakfast in Kanchanjunga can cost about US$4 to US$6, while a cup of coffee can be US1.5 to US$2. Ultimately, the cost sums up and makes anywhere from US$25 to US$30, which is a decent amount of Kanchenjunga Trekking cost.

Permit

Kanchenjunga is a restricted area, so you’ll require a permit before trekking the region. It’s issued by Nepal Tourism Board, allowing hikers to travel the forbidden area. The prime reason for doing so is to limit the number of visitors for convenience.

You’ll need a special permit to enter the region, including Restricted Area Permit and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project. You’ll have to pay US$10 per person per week for the local permit of restricted zones. Similarly, trekkers pay about US$2 per person for the conservation area entry permit. It has no time limit, so you can use it until your stay in the region. Since the permit is issued in a group, you’ll need a minimum of two trekkers to receive it.

<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone size-large wp-image-3126 lazyload” src=”https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-1024×681.jpg” alt=”Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek” width=”910″ height=”605″ sizes=”(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px” srcset=”https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek.jpg 1024w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-300×200.jpg 300w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-768×511.jpg 768w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-90×60.jpg 90w”>
<img decoding=”async” alt=”Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek” width=”910″ height=”605″ data-sizes=”(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px” class=”alignnone size-large wp-image-3126 lazyload lazyload” src=”https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-1024×681.jpg” srcset=”https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek.jpg 1024w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-300×200.jpg 300w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-768×511.jpg 768w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-90×60.jpg 90w”><img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone size-large wp-image-3126 lazyload” src=”https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-1024×681.jpg” alt=”Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek” width=”910″ height=”605″ srcset=”https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek.jpg 1024w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-300×200.jpg 300w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-768×511.jpg 768w, https://greatadventuretreks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Kanchenjunga-Circuit-Trek-90×60.jpg 90w” sizes=”(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px”>
Clothing & Equipment

Trails in Kanchenjunga are somewhat rough and challenging, with many hurdles to overcome. Most of its routes are inaccessible, given steep hills and mountain ridges that are tiring to walk. Hence, it’s improbable for trekkers to finish the hike without the necessary supplies and gear.

You might have inconveniences trekking in the absence of enough trekking essentials. Therefore, it’s worth spending US$200 to US$500 on the trekking gears for a better hiking experience. It’ll ensure your safety and make trekking easier.

Some of the essentials that are a must on Kanchenjunga trekking consist of sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles, mittens, and a sleeping bag. It’ll be wise to spend a few bucks on a high-quality down jacket that can resist water.

Transportation cost

The transportation cost for Kanchenjunga Trekking depends on the mode of transportation you pick. Taking a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur can cost you about US$375. Similarly, a private jeep ride from Illam to Taplejung and Tapethok can cost anywhere from US$90 to US$100.

Itinerary:

Day 01: Flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur to Illam

We’ll take our flight to Bhadrapur early in the morning. A good option to start the trek off is to take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla before starting the trek.

Travel insurance cost

Due to the altitude and extremely cold weather, the trek to Everest Base Camp is quite unpredictable, and anything could happen. If you need medical attention, you might need to be evacuated on a helicopter and transported to a reputable hospital. Consequently, you must have a policy of insurance that is appropriate and covers.

The paperwork for your permit application also requires some sort of insurance included in it, so it is best to have a travel insurance to cover yourself.

Guides and Porters cost

While trekking in Nepal, having a guide and a porter is always very beneficial. They are familiar with the teahouse owners and can communicate in the local tongue. With their wealth of knowledge about the trail, they’ll help you make the most of your trekking experience.

Licensed porters are required compulsory on many trail treks in Nepal for your own safety. Some guides even help you carry your luggage, but porters will also be available. They will transport your gear so you can move freely, especially at high altitudes where trekking can be challenging.

While hiring a porter costs between USD 20 to USD 25 per day, hiring a guide typically costs between USD 30 and USD 35 per day. An individual porter can handle up to 20 kg of luggage. The premium guides may charge upwards of USD 50 per day.

Although the cost doesn’t seem extravagant, you are expected to tip. Tipping is customary but not mandatory in Nepal. Tipping around 10% to the guides and porters would be a good idea.

Accommodation costs in the Everest Base Camp trek

You will be accommodated at local lodges or tea houses depending on the remoteness or the day of your travel. The cost of lodging varies from cheap teahouses to ones that are more comfortable and a few extravagant lodges.

In a basic teahouse, a bed costs about USD 5-8 per night per head on average, while a room with two beds costs USD 5. As you go higher, the cost might increase until it reaches USD 10 at Gorak Shep. In comparison, Lobuche charges a fixed USD 7 per night for lodging.

The tea house rooms are extremely basic, typically featuring two beds, a pillow, a blanket, and an attached bathroom (except at a few locations). However, you are suggested to bring a sleeping bag along to ensure cleanliness and hygiene.

Every tea house typically has a sizable dining area where guests can gather to eat and unwind while on their trek. The dining room has a fireplace in the middle that is used to heat the space while people are having dinner.

Food and Water cost

Prices for food and water vary depending on where you are, just like the tea house cost. The cost of food and water will increase as you climb higher. Surprisingly, the menus at teahouses along the trail are vast, while the selection decreases as you ascend.

The meal is rich in carbohydrates, allowing you enough energy for the trek. The most common food you will find on the trail is dal bhat, and prices range from USD 5 at the beginning of the trek to USD 12 at Gorak Shep. The same holds true for bottled water. A liter of bottled water can range from USD 1 to USD 4. The average cost of a day’s worth of food and water is between USD 25 to USD 40.

Trekking gear cost

It is imperative that you have the necessary supplies and gear with you before setting out on your trek through the Himalayan wilderness. You might have to face a lot of discomforts if you do not have these essentials covered. Trekking equipment can cost anywhere between USD 200 to USD 500. Spending a little more on such gear is better if you’re a beginner.

High-quality boots, a sleeping bag, thermal clothing, a trekking pole, warm gloves, and a water-resistant jacket are just a few examples of the equipment that is absolutely necessary.

Miscellaneous costs

It is highly advised that you make notes of every little thing you need for the trek. Instead of expecting wifi, it is best to purchase a mobile internet data pack before beginning the trek. Your monthly cost for the internet data package would be about USD 10. (depending on the volume and the network company).

It’s also best to have a power bank or solar battery charger with you so you can charge your devices. However, for a small fee, you could also purchase a power supply for the purpose. Additionally, you might be expected to give to nearby monasteries and tip your tour guides, porters, and hosts. The amount may vary, but make sure you have about USD 10 set aside as tips for your fellow travelers for the day.

You also need to keep note of the following points that you might need during your accommodation at the tea houses:

Hot showers are not included in the price unless you pay for an ensuite room. The tea houses usually heat water on the fire and bring it by the bucket. The price of a hot shower can range from USD 2 to USD 6.

Electric blankets and heaters cost about USD 20 per night, but they are not necessarily available in all lodging.

An additional fee is charged for battery charging hourly, typically between USD2 and USD6, while a power bank will cost USD10.

Not all accommodations might offer free internet. WiFi costs between USD 2 and USD 5 per hour in the mountains, despite the service being very slow.

These are the crucial expenses that make up the Everest base camp trek cost, and the itinerary for the trek will also aid on if your expense range.
